Let’s talk about gray hair — and why it’s been on my mind a lot lately.
As men, we already deal with hair loss. But just when you think you've figured that out, gray hair sneaks up on you too. For me, it’s personal. My dad and both of my grandfathers started going gray fairly young — we’re talking late 30s to early 40s. In fact, I honestly can’t remember my dad ever not being gray.
So, naturally, I know it's coming for me too. And if you're around my age, maybe it's already started for you — or maybe you’ve fully embraced it already. If that’s the case, more power to you — you silver foxes are already ahead of the game. I'm still learning, still figuring it out.
Building My “Gray Transition Plan”
So I’ve started creating what I like to call a “gray transition plan” — using hair systems as my toolkit.
Rule number one? Don’t go all in at once.
Seriously, going from 0% to 70% gray overnight is going to look way too obvious. It’s not just about the color — it’s about the natural progression. Real graying happens slowly, and your gray hair system should reflect that.
I even spoke to Eric (who you might’ve seen in one of my earlier videos) — he’s already rocking a gray hair system, and it looks awesome. I also got some advice from my stylist, Myra, who told me:
“If you’ve only got a little gray in your beard or at the sides, don’t rush to add gray into your system yet.”
Apparently, grays usually start showing in the beard and sides first — not the top — which means there’s no need to panic and overcorrect too soon.
When Should You Start Adding Gray?
When the gray becomes more visible, start small. Go for a 10% gray mix. You can get that in:
-
Stock hair systems: where gray is evenly distributed across the piece.
-
Custom hair systems: where you can choose exactly where you want the gray — temples, sides, crown, etc.
I’m personally sticking with stock systems for now. I’m planning to go from 10% to maybe 40% over the course of a few years, not months.
Think about people you know who’ve gone gray — did it happen overnight? No. Most of the time, it’s a slow, steady transition. My dad and grandparents took years, and so will I.
Don’t Panic About a Few Grays
The takeaway here? Don’t panic if you see a couple of white hairs in your beard or on the sides. That doesn’t mean you need to jump to a 10% gray system immediately.
Grays make an impact visually. Even a 10% gray system will be noticeable — so be intentional with when you start adding it.
In short:
-
Go slow.
-
Think long-term.
-
Match your system to your real-life pace of change.
Your Turn — Let’s Talk
If you’ve already gone gray, how did you do it?
-
Did you jump straight to 40–50%?
-
Did you learn anything the hard way?
-
If you’re still early in the journey (like me), are you making a plan yet?
Let me know — I’d love to hear your thoughts and build a conversation around this.
Final Thoughts
Going gray doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and a thoughtful approach, you can own your silver look with confidence.
Take your time. Ease into it. And most importantly — enjoy the process.
