The Guide to Tackle with Build up Scalp

November 5, 2020

While considered insignificant, scalp buildup can cause many troubles if not treated timely. It usually occurs as a result of poor hair care routine that implies: rare hair wash and excess use of styling products. Removing the buildup can become a hard task if you let it dry and penetrate the scalp reaching to follicles and clogging them. This is why, you need to take immediate action and we are here to help you. In this article, we provide valuable information about scalp residue that will help you deal with it easier and faster.

Why is scalp buildup dangerous?

Well, the biggest concern about untreated scalp residue is that it reaches to the follicles and clogs them, blocking the natural process of hair growth. That said, you risk suffering from hair loss if you don’t address such an insignificant, at first sight, problem as scalp buildup. The residue material cannot be only flakes from dandruff and hair products. It can also refer to oil buildup that accumulates over and over on the scalp as you keep skipping hair wash.

The oil creates a coat on the scalp that impedes skin from breathing stripping the cells of oxygen and causing premature thinning. Moreover, the excess oil reaches to the follicles, filling them and stopping hair growth. This is why you have to wash your hair regularly to prevent residue from causing these issues. A person with a normal hair is recommended to wash the hair 3-4 times a week.

Shampooing tips

1. Apply the shampoo on a wet hair

Before shampooing, rinse your hair well to ensure that the product is distributed evenly. Moreover, you need less shampoo if you apply it on a wet hair.

2. Rinse with warm water

Do your first rinse using warm water as it will encourage the cuticles to open up for better product penetration and cleaning.

3. Shampoo only the scalp

There is no need to apply product on the hair. Apply it only on the scalp and then it will run down to hair strands while washing. Moreover, if you apply shampoo on hair ends, they will get dry.

4. Don’t rub aggressively

It might give the impression that more buildup is removed, but it is not a good idea. Replace aggressive rubbing with gentle massage motions to protect the scalp from injury and prevent hair breakage.

Remedies for scalp residue removal

1. Clarifying shampoo

This product is specially designed for buildup. So use it every time you feel excess build on your scalp or when you use an exaggerated amount of styling products.

2. Aspirin scrub

Aspirin is rich in acetylic acid that is an amazing exfoliant. Prepare a scrub from 4 pills mixed with four tablespoons of warm water, and rub it on the scalp, removing all dead cells and product residue.

3. Apple cider vinegar

This mixture works wonders when it comes to buildup removal. It not only eliminates residue but also acts as an antibacterial agent protecting the scalp against infection. Pour 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar on your scalp and leave it to stay for 3 minutes. Then rinse it out with cold water.

How to prevent buildup on scalp?

1. Don’t overuse styling products

Styling products like sprays, shampoos, creams, butter, conditioners and gels are a huge source of buildup. This is why you are better off using less of them.

2. Avoid heat hair care tools

Using blow dryers and curlers excessively can dry out the scalp, encouraging excess production of oil that leads to buildup.

3. Brush your hair every day

Daily brushing with a wide-tooth comb keeps hair from getting tangled and allows for an even spreading of oils which will prevent the accumulation of excess oil in one place on the scalp.

To sum up, scalp buildup occurs when you don’t wash the hair as often as you should do. The accumulated dandruff, oil and product residue impede skin breathing, cause infections, and clog follicles leading to hair loss. You can remove buildup using such remedies as clarifying shampoo or apple cider vinegar. If you haven’t experienced buildup yet, you are better off taking preventive measures, such as: avoiding excessive use of hair products and heat styling and brushing every day.
